PRESS BOX: BASEBALL
Things, at the moment, are pretty cool for Luke.
Luke Johnson, a Lake Forest High School grad, is spending the summer in Martha’s Vineyard, playing for the Sharks in the Futures Collegiate Baseball League of New England.
And right now, Johnson is playing at a high level. After 90 at-bats, he’s hitting .300 with two home runs and 14 runs batted in. He also has swiped five bases.
Johnson went into the summer with plenty of confidence. He turned in an award-winning season for Bucknell University in the spring. The junior shortstop claimed All-Patriot League Second-Team honors after hitting .282 with three home runs, 24 runs and 27 RBIs.
Johnson (6-foot, 175 pounds) fared well in big moments, hitting .310 with runners in scoring position.
And he was very good at hitting left-handers. Batting in the middle of the order, he hit .419 against southpaws.
Not known for power, Johnson’s first collegiate home run was a grand slam against Army on April 9.
Johnson has made 77 starts during his three seasons with the Bison.
