PRESS BOX: BASKETBALL
This looks like a terrific fit.
Glenbrook South basketball player Matt Giannakopoulos will be taking his game to Illinois Wesleyan.
The three-year starter, who was one of the best inside/outside players in the area last winter, will be joining a solid Division III program, which competes in the tough College Conference of Illinois and Wisconsin (CCIW).
Giannakopoulos finished the 2016-17 season averaging 18.2 points and 6.4 rebounds per game. The all-Central Suburban League South Division selection shot 39 percent from beyond the arc (59-152).
The 6-foot-5 guard/forward put up 40 points in a 79-73 setback to Niles North on June 13. And in one three-game stretch, “Matty G” made 19 three-pointers, including six against New Trier on Jan. 20.
As a junior, Giannakopoulos shot 42 percent from three-point range and 78 percent from the foul line. He averaged 11.3 points and 4.6 rebounds per game.
The Titans went 17-8 last winter. They finished fourth in the 2006 NCAA Division III national tournament.
