It was decisive.
The FC United boys soccer team took first place in the 19/20U boys division at the 2017 US Youth Soccer Region II Championships in Sioux Falls, South Dakota, on June 28.
The squad, which is coached by Yianny Caparos, defeated OP 97-98 of Ohio 3-0 in the title match. The team also cruised in the semifinal round, topping Sporting OFC 98 Elite of Nebraska 3-0 on June 27.
In the preliminaries, FC United went 2-0-1, scoring a 6-0 victory over Kings Hammer (Kentucky) and a 3-0 win over Midwest United (Minnesota). In its opener, FC United tied Liverpool (Michigan) 1-1.
Instead of advancing to the national championships in Frisco, Texas on July 24-30, FC United will the Midwest Region in the National League tournament.
Ben Brandt (Stevenson) scored a pair of goals in the title game. Noah Melick (Jacobs) added the other goal.
In the semifinal, Julian Hilpuesch (Loyola Academy) scored along with Melick and Jaylen Anderson (Mount Carmel).
The roster also includes Seth Grossman (Glenbrook North), Sean Hickey (LA), Tim Iscra (GBN), Ryan Grady (Deerfield), Matthew Grady (Deerfield), Jose Castillo-Bahena, Kevin Terhaerdt (North Shore Country Day), Nash Pirie (Barrington), Alfredo Guzman (Lane Tech), Manny Cerritos (Mount Carmel), Jake Nunez (Stevenson), Jonathan Sanchez (Wheeling), Andres Marx (Francis Parker), Alexander Alfaro, Jose Agular and Aaron Whiteman (Mount Prospect).
FC United 18U Boys: This FC United team just missed making it to the championship game of the Region II Championships.
After going 3-0 in the preliminary rounds, FC United dropped a 1-0 decision to OP Green of Ohio in the semifinal round on June 27.
The Pat Flynn-coached squad opened the tournament with a 4-0 win over DM Menace of Iowa on June 23. Will Felitto (New Trier) tallied two of the goals. Ruben Delgadillo (Warren) and Logan Weaver (NT) also scored.
Felitto, Weaver and Delgadillo had one goal each in FC United’s 4-3 victory over the Kansas Rush Academy on June 24. Jose Mariscal (Wheeling) also scored.
Mariscal, Delgadillo and Colin Thompson (Evanston) came up with the goals in the team’s 3-1 victory over Sporting STL of Missouri on June 25.
The team also features Benjamin Axelrod (NT), Mateo Blair (NT), Deng Deng (Glenbrook North), JoJo Farina (NT), Robbie Frazer (GBN), Evan Goldberg (GBN), David Gripman (Loyola Academy), Chase Heyman (Francis Parker), Ryan Krueger (NT), Sahil Modi (GBN), Matthew Randall (Stevenson), Mason Rose (GBN), Sam Rutherford (NT), Riles Walsh (NT) and Sam Warden (NT).
FC United 19-20 U Girls: A hat trick by Devin Burns was one of the highlights for this FC United squad at the Midwest Championships in South Dakota.
Burns, a Loyola Academy graduate who made 12 starts (3 goals, 3 assists) during her freshman season at the University of Iowa, came up with her three-goal outing in a 4-1 victory over the Kansas Rush on June 24.
With Burns leading the way, FC United went 2-1 in the preliminaries and just missed making the semifinals. The squad lost a 4-3 decision to the eventual champs, EGA of Nebraska, on June 23 before edging FC Pride 98 Elite 1-0 on June 25.
Burns had one of the goals against EGA. The other goals were scored by Olivia Peters (Glenbrook South/Walsh University) and Michayla Herr (Barrington).
Peters had a notable first season at Walsh. She finished with a team-high 22 points (14 goals, 5 assists) to earn all-GLIAC (Great Lakes Intercollegiate Athletic Conference) second-team honors. She also was named the league’s Freshman of the Year. And she was selected to the Ohio Collegiate Soccer Association (OCSA) second team.
In the win over FC Pride, Caroline Iserloth, who will be a senior at New Trier, tallied the game’s lone goal in the 48th minute.

FC United 17U Girls: This squad went 1-1-1 in regional action.
FC United opened play with a 1-0 setback to Compton United on June 23. Then after tying Cup 00 Gold of South Carolina 1-1, the team topped SC Waukesha of Wisconsin 2-0 on June 25.
Maggie Brett (Loyola Academy) and Makayla Stadler (Glenbrook South) tallied the goals against Waukesha. Anissa Nourse (Fenwick) had the team’s goal against Cup 00 Gold.
Craig Snower was the head coach. LFSA Select 16U Girls: The Lake Forest-based team got off to a terrific start in the Region II Championships in South Dakota.
LFSA, which is coached by Mostafa Edders, scored twice in the second half to beat TFA Elite of Ohio 2-0 on June 23. Ingrid Falls tallied both goals.
Goals, however, were hard to come by in the final two preliminaries games as LFSA ended up with 0-0 ties against Indiana Fire on June 24 and Eclipse Select of Minnesota on June 25.
The other team members include Heidi Bianucci, Sarah Bires, Paige Copeland, Sophia Divagno, Nicole Doucette, Kirsten Kendler, Malori Killoren, Julia Loeger, Alyssa Marquis, Bridget Mitchell, Jalyn Mosley, Callistra O’Connor, Gabi Sipe, Quinn Sokol, Christina Teik and Alicia White.
