I am very concerned about the vitriolic politics and attack ads occurring in the District 115 School Board election this spring. I served on the District 65 School Board for 8 years, 4 of them as president. In the twenty-five years I have lived in Lake Bluff I have known many other school board members and have great respect for each of them.
In my experience each of us ran for the school board because we cared about the community and public education. Individual philosophies existed and probably each of us was hopeful that we would have an impact on various aspects of the school district. Within months of being elected the depth and complexity of school governance revealed itself. From fund accounting to tax levies, state and federal regulations, teacher negotiations, aging infrastructure and in depth curricula review, there is much to learn and understand. In addition there is a gamut of educational abilities and needs to be met.
In all this time I have never seen a group of 4 run as a slate to acquire a majority position on the Board. In my opinion this alone disqualifies the Final Four as worthy school board candidates. I have met each of the Caucus endorsed candidates, or the First Four, and believe that as individuals they have the best interests of the community in mind and are willing to work with the other board members and not as a controlling block.
Please vote for Tom Nemickas, Sally Davis, Ted Moorman and David Lane to protect the structure and integrity of the District 115 Board.
In addition, I would suggest that the Final Four take the remainder of their vast war chest and donate it to the Lake Forest High School Foundation.
