LAKE BLUFF – Railway repairs and testing will delay eastbound and westbound traffic on Route 176 (Rockland Road) on Thursdasy, March 16. The intersection, near Route 176 and Highway 41, is open to through traffic but may be blocked for extended periods as rail traffic proceeds through the intersection at slow speeds.
Until testing of the repaired railway is complete later this afternoon, passing trains are required by federal regulations to reduce their speed in the area of the repair.
Travelers should use an alternate east-west route if possible. Alternates include Deerpath Road, three miles south, or Route 137 (Buckley Road), three miles north. Emergency services will not be affected.
The repairs are due to a partial freight train derailment that occurred early Wednesday morning, March 15, in Lake Forest on a Union Pacific freight line. There were no injuries to the crew or to the public, no hazardous material releases and no impacted motorist grade crossings.
Lake Bluff is cooperating with Union Pacific to expedite repairs and return the railway to normal operation as quickly as possible.
