LAKE FOREST — A man found dead inside a southeast Lake Forest garage after firefighters extinguished a blaze there March 5 was killed by the fire, according to Lake County Coroner Dr. Howard Cooper.
Cooper said in a DailyNorthShore.Com interview March 7 that John Marshall, 39, died from smoke inhalation and burns as a result of the fire. He declined to give further details because of sensitivity to Marshall’s family. Next of kin have been notified.
Marshall’s death is not a homicide, according to Cooper.
Marshall was working at Bernie’s Book Bank in Lake Bluff at the time of his death, according to an obituary published on DNS. He was a graduate of Williston Northampton School in Easthampton, Mass., and completed his studies at Metropolitan State University in St. Paul, Minn.

The Lake Forest Fire Department is investigating the cause of the fire, according to Lake Forest Police Commander Craig Lepkowski.
Fire Battalion Chief Mike Gallo said the investigation is continuing into the cause of the fire and could take up to three weeks. It takes longer when a death is involved. He said it is the city’s fourth fire death since 2000 and the first since 2004.
Firefighters were originally called to the home in the morning of March 5 when a fire was reported, according to an earlier DNS story. On arrival, the fire department found the blaze limited to the garage and extinguished it in three minutes. Once the fire was out, the fire crew found Marshall’s body, according to Lipkowski.
Lepkowski said the department is not giving out details of the location of the fire and death other than southeast Lake Forest.
“In the last two fires we gave out more information about the location and burglars broke into the boarded up homes,” said Lepkowski. “Now we have those investigations.”
