GLENVIEW — A burglar broke into a car, stole the garage door opener and used it to enter the garage and commit a second burglary in the 2500 block of Independence Avenue on Feb. 22 in Glenview, according to Glenview Police reports. The estimated damage is $100.
Those burglaries were two of a dozen committed in the village in a seven-day span between Feb. 21 and Feb. 27, including seven on Feb. 22, according to the reports. The aggregate loss was $2,005.
Most of the cars were unlocked, according to Glenview Police Sgt. James Foley. He said 10 of the break-ins were to vehicles and two to garages. Of the 10 break-ins to cars, he said six were unlocked. In the other four, the victims did not report whether the cars were locked or unlocked.
“Hiding your valuables and locking your car would be a good practice,” said Foley. “It’s good people feel safe but they should take precautions.”
The burglaries committed Feb. 22 were all within a few miles of each other. When asked if they were related, Foley said they were under investigation. The string of break-ins started at 7:42 a.m. that day and all but one were reported in less than two hours.
A person entered two unlocked vehicles in the 3100 block of Bellwood Lane at 7:42 a.m. Feb. 22, taking cash and tools valued at $450.00, according to the report. At 8:17 a.m., someone entered an unlocked car in the 3700 block of Springdale Road, taking $5 cash.
Just over 20 minutes later on Feb. 22, someone entered an unlocked car in the 3100 block of Bellwood Lane stealing cash and tools worth $60, according to the report. The final burglary of the day took place less than two hours later in the 1600 block of Annapolis Drive, where $20 cash was taken. Foley said it was not known if the last theft was from a locked or unlocked car.
The week’s burglaries started Feb. 21 when a person entered an unlocked vehicle in the 4400 block of Lainie Circle taking money, clothing and accessories valued in the amount of $1,000, according to the report.
A burglar entered an unlocked vehicle on Feb. 23 in the 1500 block of Independence Avenue, according to the report. The victim reported no loss.
A pair of car burglaries took place Feb. 25, according to the report. A person entered an unlocked car in the 2400 block of Greenwood Road taking $20 cash. Later that day, cash and coins valued at $350 was taken from a car in the 2400 block of Rebecca Lane. Foley said the victim did not report whether the car was locked or unlocked.
A victim reported someone entered their garage February 27 in the 4500 block of Lilac Avenue. Nothing was reported taken.
