With the belief that the North Shore is hungry for more art experiences, Vivid Art Gallery announced plans to introduce monthly “First Friday” art openings in Winnetka beginning in November. The event will be modeled after similar long-running First Fridays held in Chicago and many other cities, with the idea of presenting art in a fun social setting. Wine and beer, hors d’oeuvres, desserts and live music will add to the enjoyment of the art.
“The goal of our “First Friday” openings is to create some excitement around art and spotlight our upcoming Featured Artist of the month and Local Artist of the month,” says gallery owner, Cynthia Burr. “It’s a perfect date night destination – you can stop by before or after dinner, see some beautiful art, and connect with the local art community.”
Burr hopes that eventually other local galleries, art studios, and retail stores will join in the First Friday festivities, envisioning food trucks, street music, and other entertainment. “The popularity of the recent “Art Attack” event in Hubbard Woods shows that people on the North Shore are interested in art and are looking for fun, local things to do on a Friday night,” says Burr. “We hope to be able to provide an exciting venue once a month for that crowd.”
The inaugural “First Friday” will be held this Friday, November 4, from 5:30 to 8:30 pm. Darren Oberto, the gallery’s Featured Artist in November, will be exhibiting many of his “Turntable” works, which he creates using an actual turntable that he built to create art when his studio was converted into a nursery for his daughter two years ago. His paintings, which are ink on frosted mylar, have an organic, meditative quality about them, while at the same time providing bursts of color.
Oberto will also be showing some of his work in other media at the gallery during the month. Susan Jacoby is Vivid’s Local Artist of the Month, under a program that the gallery has instituted offering display space to a different local artist each month. Jacoby, a North Shore artist, paints atmospheric landscapes and skyscapes with a soft focus effect. Both artists will be available at the First Friday event to talk to gallery guests. Live music will be supplied by the Roy McGrath Jazz Trio.
Vivid Art Gallery opened October 1 and offers a wide variety of art styles, media, and price points. The work of over ten artists is displayed at any one time. In addition to paintings, the gallery exhibits jewelry and ceramics. It brings depth of options for art seekers, but also depth of experience on both sensory and intellectual levels. Vivid is a warm, inviting space where you can spend time talking to the owner about the artists and the work. The space boasts dynamic displays, with frequent rotation of new art and artists. There are movable walls so the space can fit the art as it changes.
Vivid Art Gallery is owned by Glencoe resident, Cynthia Burr, who collaborates with Evanston resident and Interior Designer, Martha Ruschman, who acts as curator. It is located at 895 Green Bay Rd, Hubbard Woods. Hours of business are Tuesday through Saturday 10 am.. to 5 p.m. www.vividartgallery.net
