Too bad senior doubles ace Colette O’Regan isn’t on the five-year plan at Glenbrook North.
The senior and her sister, junior Catherine O’Regan, finished seventh at state in doubles two years ago, third at state in doubles last fall and second at state in doubles on Oct. 22.
The siblings were too good for most of the 2016 season, going undefeated in the regular season and receiving the No. 1 state seed in doubles. The O’Regans fell 6-2, 6-2 to Hinsdale Central’s Erika Oku and Megan Guenther in the Class 2A state championship final at Buffalo Grove High School.
“It was fun to watch Colette and Catherine grow as players, as a doubles team,” Spartans coach Peggy Holecek said. “I remember, three years ago, Colette coming up to me and saying, ‘I want to play doubles with my sister.’ ”
The pair made program history last weekend, becoming the only Spartans tandem to collect medals at back-to-back girls state tennis meets. They came up a victory short of matching the state doubles championship earned by Stephanie Heller/Ali Salomone, in 2004.
The O’Regans won each of the their first five tests in straight sets, beginning with a 6-0, 6-3 defeat of Belleville East’s Isabel Burwttz/Chloe McIassac on Oct. 20. They topped Stevenson’s Gina Kondos/Elizabeth Ferdman 6-3, 7-5 in a state semifinal on Oct. 24.
GBN, the team, finished with 12 points, good for an eighth-place tie. Not bad, since only “O’Regan squared” represented the Spartans at state last weekend.
New Trier and Highland Park High School tied for sixth place, each netting 13 points. Loyola Academy (10 points) finished in a tie for 11th place, Lake Forest High School (seven) in a tie for 19th.
NT junior Amia Ross and sophomore Michelle Capone placed fifth in doubles; HP singles entrant Caitlin Goldberg and the Giants’ doubles teams of Devin Davidson/Halle Michael and Monique Braul/Samara Michael won three matches apiece; LA’s Caroline Witkowski/Maggie Hines went 5-2 in doubles, reaching the seventh round of the consolation bracket; and LFHS received two doubles victories from Julianna Roman/Nika Belova.
