If you are heading west on Davis Street in downtown Evanston, perhaps planning to pop into Bennison’s Bakery for a treat, you will pass a little three-flat that has an interesting past and a unique present. The building at 922 Davis Street started out as a boarding house for railway workers when the Davis Street train station was being built; today it is a multi-level coworking space for entrepreneurs, remote workers and other independent professionals.
Creative Coworking is a beautiful, art-filled space offering a professional alternative to a home office or coffee shop. Founded in 2011 by Angela and Stelios Valavanis, Creative Coworking is a quiet, comfortable workspace with a sense of community. Angela was a textbook editor prior to becoming the office manager and art gallery curator. Stel is the founder and president of onShore Security, a technology business in Chicago. Together, they have created the perfect space for you to work.
“Using Creative Coworking has been such a wonderful way to incubate my business. Not only have I found a fun vibe, great people, and plenty of work space here, I have met some great partners along the way,” member Joey Conway, owner of Events By Joey, shares about his experience.
Joey uses the conference rooms at Creative Coworking to meet with clients, and he also takes advantage of the mailing address, one of many services available to members of the space. Other benefits of membership include unlimited printing/faxing/scanning, high-speed Wifi, kitchens stocked with snacks and fresh coffee, as well as 24-hour access to the building. Creative Coworking helps its members experience independence without isolation.
The first thing one notices when stepping into Creative Coworking is that there is art on every wall. With work by more than 50 local artists on display, the space is ever-changing and always inspiring its members. The three-story building allows for collaboration zones as well as quiet work zones, so you can find the perfect setting for your preferred mode. There’s even a rooftop deck for days when you want to work outside or take a lunch break in the sun. Members can reserve large conference rooms or small meetings rooms, work at a different desk every day or have their own reserved desk or private office.
Another thing that is hard to miss are the office interns, who are always ready to help with an array of tasks. Whether for help connecting to a printer or designing a brand new website, interns are available every weekday to assist members.
Psychologist Sarah Warren, a long-time member, explains, “The interns alone could keep me renewing my membership.”
Located at Davis and Elmwood, Creative Coworking is just a few steps from the stations for both the Metra and CTA trains and multiple bus lines. Stop by for a tour anytime 9 a.m. to 5 p.m. on a weekday or visit their website creativecoworking.com for information and community updates.
Creative Coworking in Evanston will soon have a sister location in the Edgewater neighborhood of Chicago. Angela and Stel Valavanis will bring their community-minded, artistic business concept to the historic Colvin House mansion at the corner of Sheridan Road and Thorndale Avenue in Winter 2016. Look for the signs with their telltale CC logo next time you drive by.
