STICK NATION: FIELD HOCKEY
It’s been a very good offseason for Elise Wong. The Lake Forest High School graduate and former Windy City Field Hockey standout has been selected to participate in the USA Stars and Stripes Tournament and Training Camp.
Earlier this year, Wong, who will be a sophomore at Princeton University, was a member of the United States U19 National Team, which played in an international tournament in Germany.
Playing on junior national teams is nothing new for Wong. She has been a member of the U19 team for the past two years. She also was on the U17 team (2012-15).
Known as a defensive stalwart, Wong was named First Team All-Ivy during her freshman at Princeton.
During her high school days, she led Lake Forest to a state title in 2013. And the Scouts took runner-up honors in 2014, when Wong earned the state’s Player of the Year honor.
At the Stars and Stripes Tournament, Wong will be joined by Lake Forest’s Lucinda Lytle and Windy City’s Christen Conley, who will be a senior at Oak Park-River Forest High School.
Lytle, who attended Deerfield Academy in Massachusetts, just completed her sophomore year at Boston College.
The tournament and camp will be held Dec. 26-31 in Lancaster County, Pennsylvania.
Windy City: The Northbrook-based Windy City Field Hockey Club was well represented in the 2016 National Futures Championship in Lancaster, Pennsylvania last month.
The U19 selections were Oak Park-River Forest’s Christen Conley (class of 2017) and Lake Forest’s Libby Thompson (class of 2017). Lake Forest’s Greta Kullby (class of 2017) and Lake Forest Academy’s Isabel Moody (class of 2018) were alternates.
Six Windy City players — Lake Forest’s Logan Hanekamp, North Shore Country Day’s Jessica Hourihane, Lake Forest’s Maggie Mick, Winnetka’s Alexandra Morgan and Lake Forest’s Catherine Nicholson — were U16 selections.
The U14 picks included Hilary Cox, Clara Geraghty, Grace Harris, Marley Heitman, Lauren Hughes, Maddie Kellner, Evie Lake, Julia LeClercq and Grace McGowan. Elsa Goldsberry was an alternate.
College Commitments: So far, eight Windy City players from the class of 2017 have made their college commitments.
The list includes three players from Lake Forest High School — Greta Kullby (Lafayette College), Grace Payne (Columbia University) and Libby Thompson (Duke University) — and three from New Trier — Julia Gottreich (Bowdoin College), Meghan Minturn (Colgate University) and Nell Van Schaack (Georgetown University). Meanwhile, Emma Goldberg (Latin School of Chicago) will play at Colgate, while Christen Conley (Oak Park-River Forest) will play at Northwestern.
