The Lake Forest Symphony held its annual benefit at the Onwentsia Club in Lake Forest, on Saturday, February 6, 2016. Entitled Hot Jazz on a Cold Night, the proceeds of the evening will provide support for the Lake Forest Symphony’s Educational Initiatives, which include in-school education concerts, mentoring and performance opportunities for gifted young musicians and continuing education programs for adults.
The party began with cocktails, followed by dinner and dancing to the music of the Jazz Consortium Big Band. A memorable part of the evening was the presentation of the Golden Baton Award to Jay L. Owen. The Gold Baton Award is Lake Forest Symphony’s highest honor and is bestowed on individuals who have made significant contributions to the organization. Mr. Owen has served as an active member of the Lake Forest Symphony for 15 years and as Board President for over 5 years. Previous award winners have been George Speros in 2014 and Granger Cook Jr. in 2013.
Another highlight of the evening was a performance by the Music Director of the Symphony Vladimir Kulenovic, Concertmaster Netanel Draiblate and Principal Bassoonist Drew Pattison. Also, one of the fabulous auction items was a $5,000.00 gift certificate from Razny Jewelers of Highland Park, Hinsdale and Addison. Other items included wines and dining packages.
The Onwentsia Club is a part of Lake Forest‘s history and is a lovely setting for this party. Red amaryllis decorated the dining tables. Dinner began with a salad of pears, bleu cheese and candied pecans, followed by braised short ribs accompanied with truffle-white bean puree and a dessert of crème brulee, and, of course accompanied by the appropriate wines.
Said the chairs, Lake Foresters Lynn Bruch and Gail Sturm, “The evening was special – our venue, the cuisine, the music and dancing to a fine orchestra. We also know that our guests supported a most worthy cause and enjoyed an evening with old and new friends. The monies garnered from this event will help to support our educational programs in Lake County and will ensure the continued success of this great organization.”
Members of the committee included Linda Neumann of Lake Bluff and from Lake Forest were Anna Marie Brucker, Michele Ihlanfeldt, Diane Karzas, Beth Kiernan, Susan Krakora, Camille Prindle , Elizabeth Pruett and Karey Walker. Guests from Highland Park were Ingrid and Stanley Razny, Joanne Rolek and Job Youshael and from Evanston were Dr. and Mrs. Allan Dennis and Vladimir Kulenovic.
