"Aladdin" opened at Deerpath Middle School on Wednesday, and it was a night of many debuts. The musical adaptation marks the first time District 67 and Citadel Theatre have collaborated on a product, and it's the first time the school's Brainstormers group has had an all-fifth grade cast. It also was the first stage experience for many of the performers. The 37-member cast/crew is directed by Scott Phelps, artistic director of Citadel in Lake Forest, with musical direction by Leslie Pruitt, choreography by Mario Mazzetti and Sarah Hayes, and technical direction by Christi Geidner. The next performance is Tuesday, June 2, at 9 a.m.
Since many of the "Aladdin" cast members are new to the theatre, Mr.
Phelps focused on teaching performance skills and emphasized the
importance of an ensemble cast. "The ensemble is bigger than any single
actor or roll regardless of the number of lines they have. All roles
are pivotal and everyone is part of the whole," he said.
